Chapter Nine

HER FATHER SHE DIDN’T mind seeing, but Felix Griffyth? And to see them together? Why, the last time they’d shared a room, a brawl had broken out. Sarahjane turned her father’s grip in her own. “I can’t believe it. Why are you here?” she asked, leading him to the drawing room.

He relinquished his coat and umbrella to Claire. “As I said, I am here for Lady Morville.”

“And you accompanied him?” He’d said it once but she wanted Felix to confirm it. Had they truly shared the ride?

Felix nodded and handed Alice his coat. “She has a purchase she wished me to deliver from Mr. Keane.”

“Which I could’ve easily overseen.”

“If you want the truth of it, I was afraid your father might be hiding a blade in his boot. Shocked I made it here alive, actually.”

“It’s in my umbrella handle.” Father winked at her. “Not in my boot.”

Sarahjane hid a laugh that bubbled up behind her hand. “Best mind yourself, Felix,” she said. “He’s good with knives.”

“Steak knives, I hope you mean,” Felix said.

Father wiggled his brows. “They can be deadly too, lad. Don’t think I won’t use it eventually.”

“Father!”

He winked at her.

She set her Bible aside and removed her bonnet. So, they now got along, in some form. How interesting.

Felix cleared his throat, drawing the maid’s attention. “Is Keane not here?”

Something in Sarahjane deflated. He hadn’t, then, come to see her. She let out a deep breath. “He’s in his studio,” she said. “I’ll fetch him for you. Alice, please bring tea for my—Mr. Keane’s guests.”

When the maid curtseyed, Sarahjane kissed her father’s cheek.

“Did you send me a kiss last night?” Father asked.

A soft laugh escaped her. “As every night.”

“I thought as much. It flew in through the window, every night,” he said, pushing a lock of hair behind her ear. “For your mother, too.”

Comfort flooded Sarahjane, more than she’d had in weeks. “I suppose you were too busy to answer my letters.”

“Letters?” Father asked. “I don’t recall any letters.”

Sarahjane frowned, and her gaze sought out the maids. Claire paused where she hung up father’s coat; the other women hid themselves well. “I sent several.”

“I’ve some for you,” he said, indicated his coat. While Claire held it out, he rifled through the pockets and emerged with two.

Sarahjane took the envelopes from his cold fingers, reading the names on the outside. Miss Christine Brown, Miss Althaia Edgerton.

“Althaia!” Her smile turned to a blush and she tucked the letter into her skirt pocket. “I’ll read this later.”

Father swiped a thumb at her nose and laughed. “My girl, do you ever keep all your paints on your canvases?”

“Oh, heavens!” She rubbed a hand at the offending smudge and excused herself.

Ducking inside the little hall was second nature, now. Though her father’s questioning exclamation made her smile, she didn’t turn from her trek. The hall opened out and she found the door and pushed through. Timothy sat before an easel, staring out the window. Gregory paced before the door that would take him outside.
